Northwest Dallas or Westhollow?
I believe much has changed in the naming from whoever names our areas. Before I moved up here from East Dallas (which then became Old East Dallas), and now that is further divided into sub-pockets – why would that not happen up here? I remember looking at maps decades ago. One name I saw when I was purchasing up here was called “Near North Dallas” If it was called Northwest Dallas, it escaped me.
If DPD broke out Dallas into sectors, then beats, that is their naming system – for now. Do they have more beats than they used to as population density increases again in urban, inner-city, inside-the-loop dwellings?
As vacant buildings, broken-down buildings, lots, bare lots, etc., are swiftly rebuilding, revitalizing, gentrifying, whatever you want to call it, starting from the CBD downtown, they are stories and stories higher, add restaurants, small strip centers (for lack of a better word), spreads west to Trinity Groves, north up to LBJ, south to about I-20, and east – I don’t know anything about that, just what I am seeing.
How can you avoid being in a newly-named sub-pocket? Who starts it? Ebby? Mapquest? Wiki? Wiki is confused, too. Just look at their idea of North Dallas and Far North Dallas. Conflicting.
Near North Dallas no longer explains my area correctly. I just tell people I’m west and a little north of Preston Hollow. Preston Hollow seems to be a key word for out-of-towners wanting to move here. They get Preston Hollow and what it means. Close to everything. Central. Gentrified and tear-downs for Park Cities, which is full. If they can find a home close to Preston Hollow that’s cheaper, they’re doing that. I never knew I lived in Royal Hills until ND. I thought I lived in Kenilworth Estates – LOL.
In my twenties and thirties, I was very interested in defining my image, my surroundings, my work, my social. Everything. I lived in parts of town that had no name – but plenty of occupants. They now have fancy names and the twenty-and-thirty-somethings are all up on the named pockets. I’m glad someone went to the trouble so I don’t sound so ancient when conversing about Dallas.
USPS says Preston Hollow is 2miles x 3 miles = 6 miles. Zillow says Preston Hollow extends to Luna Road. Ebby says North Dallas has part of Denton County in it and that Far North Dallas is “just north” of LBJ. Everyone, but everyone – is confused.
Again, what one person or one company or one entity is responsible for neighborhood names? It’s free and a free-for-all. I’m happy when anyone else takes effort and the time to think ahead. I would be embarrassed to jump on the popular wagon that says I am located in what is now called Preston Hollow. I prefer a different name and Westhollow and Easthollow are a lot better than some I see like “Singing Hills” or “Urban Reserve”. My $.02!
